+ HOW DO I GET THERE?

There are in general three options to get to Femund Canoe Camp: by car, rental car or by bus. If you are flying to Oslo airport and are planning to travel to Femund Canoe Camp by bus, make sure to book your flight in the morning so you will reach us in the afternoon or evening. You can easily reach the village Trysil within 3 hours drive from the airport, but only 1-2 buses per day go from Trysil to our camp/Femund.

+ HOW IS THE WEATHER AND WHAT CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

During summer we can have temperatures between 25°C and -2°C. The weather may change in a few seconds so make sure to bring clothing that can handle wind and rain. Also, daytime temperatures are usually nice for active holidays ranging between 10°C and 20°C, but evenings and nights may get cold. Bring wool sweaters, long underpants, a hat and gloves. And make sure not to forget your shorts and swimming suit!

+ WHERE CAN I CAMP?

The public right of access entitles anyone to hike and camp anywhere in the countryside in Norway. The regulation applies to uncultivated land like lakes, beaches, marshes, forests and mountains. Please avoid camping on cultivated land. Also, please stay away from private camps and cabins you encounter.

+ WHERE CAN I PARK MY CAR?

You can park your car at the parking place here at Femund Canoe Camp. Parking is for free when you rent a canoe, cabin, tent or camp here.

+ CAN I CHARGE MY ELECTRIC CAR?

Yes, we have to EV-parkings with Type 2 contacts and 7,4 kWh charge. The service Charge365 is used for registration and payment.

+ I WANT TO START MY TRIP SOMEWHERE ELSE

No problem at all. We offer transport (canoes, equipment, luggage, persons) to any place within ca. 30 minutes drive from our camp.

+ WHAT FISH CAN I EXPECT?

This may vary depending on where you plan to go paddling. Please see our canoe trip options for fishers and this guide. Upon arrival, we will also give advice based on where other canoe guests have been succesful in catching fish the last days. You can buy fishing license at Femund Canoe Camp.

+ ARE THERE ANY DANGEROUS ANIMALS?

There are a lot of wild animals in the Femund area, but none of them are dangerous. You may be almost sure to meet reindeers, which are held by the local Sami people, and if you are lucky you will spot moose, fox and hare. Large predators like bears, wolves, wolverine and lynx are around, but the chances you will spot one is extremely small. These animals are shy and walk away when they hear humans. Be aware of snakes that may be sunbathing on warm stones though.

+ WHERE DO I BUY MY GROCERIES?

We have a cafeteria offering last-minute refreshments before your trip as well as a kiosk with dry food and practical equipment. A large grocery store is located in the village Drevsjø, 12 km from Femund Canoe Camp. Here, you can find fresh and dry food, first aid equipment, and general equipment needed for a canoe trip.

+ HOW DO I PADDLE A CANOE?

You need no special technique to paddle a canoe. Most children and adults will automatically learn how to maneuver a canoe from only a few minutes trial and error. Upon arrival, we will instruct you in how to handle your canoe, how to pack it and how to keep it stable in strong wind conditions.

+ HOW DO I KNOW WHERE TO PADDLE?

We have a detailed description of our canoeing areas for different wishes and desires (link). Upon arrival we will go through your wishes and desires in detail, so that we can suggest a trip that also fits with the ruling weather conditions. We sell detailed maps for all the waters covered by Femund Canoe Camp, and we strongly recommend to bring one along your trip. Please ask our staff if you are uncertain about how to read a map or to navigate the waters. The maps can be booked together with your canoe and/or be bought upon arrival.

+ HOW SHOULD I PACK MY BAGGAGE?

We advice you to pack in watertight bags or barrels, which you can optionally rent from us. If your trip involves traveling long distances with land transports (the beaches of Femund-Isteren, the Femund-Isteren-Sølensjøen challenge), we advice you to pack in large backpacks so you will not need to return to catch your equipment when transporting the canoe over land. If you plan to stay mostly on the same water with no need to carry or transport the canoe (Peaceful Jyltingsmarka, Cultural Gutulia, Mountaineous Fjellgutusjøan).

+ ARE THERE MANY MOSQUITOS?

The worst mosquito outbreaks are in June and subsides during July. The amounts of mosquitos varies from year to year. Usually, you are well protected if you were repellent and alternatively a mosquito hat. Both are for sale in our kiosk. The mosquitos do not carry diseases, however the bites may itch.

+ CAN I MAKE A CAMP FIRE AND HOW?

By definition, it is not allowed to make a camp fire between April 15th and September 15th. However, despite the general ban, you are allowed to make a camp fire where it is obvious that it can not start a forest fire. If you choose to make a camp fire, make use of existing fire places – you will often see stones in a circle which are suitable for reuse. Also make sure you are close to water and that there is no vegetation nearby. Femund Canoe Camp sells firewood. Some summer periods are particularly dry and all use of open fire is strictly forbidden. Make sure you are up to date before your trip. We know the latest regulations.

+ CAN I PICK BERRIES?

Yes, as much as you like. You can find blueberries, lingonberries and cloudberries. Cloudberries are regarded a delicatesse in Norway. Locals have their own secret spot where they go every year and pick berries for their christmas dinner dessert.

+ WHAT WATER CAN I DRINK?

You can drink all water in the larger lakes and all streaming waters. Thus, there is no reason to bring additional water on your trip. Be careful in swampy areas with stagnant water, small water holes with swamp grass around may contain brown particles and cause stomach problems.

+ WHAT CURRENCY DO YOU ACCEPT?

The valid currency at Femund Canoe Camp is Norwegian kroner (NOK). We accept the following debit and credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, V Pay, Visa Electron, JCB. The nearest bank and ATM is located in Engerdal (35km).
